basics

Viridescent Agate (who goes by Viri) is a gecko faunus who grew up in Vacuo in a mining family within a traveling tribe, the Yeshibu, and then went to Atlas Academy as her parents encouraged her to see more of the world. She's part of Team SABL (Sable), along with Suvi Gris, Berrin Che, and Lys Fleur. As a huntswoman who's managed to live into her late 20s, Viri has seen a lot and experienced a lot, including a mission where she suffered a deep wound to her face and then spent months getting reconstructive surgery after. She's aggressive, proactive, a bit smug about her skills, but also deeply caring and devoted even if it comes across as teasing banter. True ride or die friend.

She always wears glasses, because she’s severely farsighted to the point anything close up to her is blurry blobs. In school she was aggressive and arrogant as a means of deflection and protection, not wanting to let people get close and thinking she didn’t need friends, just allies will to get things done. Protecting people from Grimm was their job and she didn’t need friends for that. But through her time with SABL at Atlas she really grew to care about her team and now they are the only family she has left (her parents died their senior year in Academy). She would do anything for SABL and she also hates most authority figures or most of the elites in Atlas as they aren’t exactly kind to faunus and she thinks they look down on the working people in Mantle. So fuck them.

setting
history

  • The Agate Family immigrated to Vacuo four generations ago after fleeing faunus persecution in Mistral and not wanting to settle on Menagerie.
  • They joined up with the nomadic Yeshibu tribe and became firmly entrenched. Many people in the Yeshibu clan travel around the deserts working in the dust mines, or what is left of them. Then they began mining precious stones and other deposits when the dust mines dried up.
  • Viridescent was born on 11/30. Her parents are Garnette Hugh and Laurel Agate.
  • Viri did not go to a combat prep school, because she’s dyslexic and also very farsighted to the point that reading and studying can take hours longer for her than most people. She was instead trained by a former huntswoman who traveled with her tribe, Liona Sitryn. She is also the one who told Viri that long-range weapons were her best bet considering her eyesight, so she helped her develop her Sharpshooter crossbow idea before helping her parents pay for her to take the entrance exams for Atlas and then enroll.
  • Viri was paired with Suvi Gris, Berrin Che, and Lys Fleur to make the team SABL (Sable). Berrin and Lys are two years older than Viri and Suvi due to having been at Beacon and then transferring to Atlas and having to start over with a new team.
  • She went by "Agate" when she first got to Atlas because she dislikes how long and "hippy" her name is, in her opinion. It wasn't until Lys gave her the nickname Viri that she started using it.
  • Viri knew that Faunus were not treated well in the other kingdoms before attending Atlas, but it was very different to experience the prejudice and discrimination herself. She already disliked elites because of how they looked down on the poor and less fortunate, but the anti-faunus/racist treatment only make her more certain they were shitty people. This also colored her view of Suvi, who was a faunus, but came from a very well-off family who seemed to do nothing for the faunus suffering in Mantle.
  • Suvi and Viri butt heads a lot during their first year, to the point the team was on the verge of falling apart. Lys finally had enough and let them both have it. Viri accepted that her confrontational behavior was not helping their team and was making her a liability, so she tried to be a better team player.
  • It’s their second year when they go on their first big mission abroad and it goes terribly. Lys was so stressed from trying to hold the team together with Suvi and Viri arguing that she made a mistake in the field and got injured. Viri overextended herself trying to send a large Grimm through a portal to get Lys out of danger. Her aura broke from overuse and she got cut deeply in the face, enough that she needed reconstructive surgery for some of the damage. Suvi especially stayed by her side while she was in the hospital. They finally talked (most of it was banter and bickering, but it was talking), and it felt like a big change had happened in their team relationship.
  • A couple months out from graduation, Viri had trouble contacting her parents and assumed the Yeshibu were away from any communication towers to get her messages. But then she finally did get a message from Liona. Her parents were dead, killed by a sandworm when the tribe had been avoiding a herd of Grimm that had gotten too close to their normal tribe travel route.
  • It hit Viri extremely hard to lose her parents, but her teammates were there for her. They even traveled with her after graduation to Vacuo to see Liona and her grandmother, Verdi, her only family left.
  • SABL was a successful team, even if they didn’t get much acclaim. They were good at what they did and didn’t take shit from anyone else.
  • Ozpin requested them for a mission involving transporting Fria back to Atlas through a region that was rife with Grimm and helping out some of the villages as they went. When one village was so bombarded they wanted Viri and Suvi with Fria to get her out as quickly as possible (because of Viri’s Semblance) while Lys and Berrin were to stay behind and cover them and the villagers escaping.
  • Ozpin wanted Suvi to stay with Fria, but Suvi rejected his offer. They jumped out of the transport ship and Suvi glided them down to the ground where they immediately jumped into to help take care of the Grimm.
  • None of them survived this battle, but they went out as a team. Viri was stabbed through trying to repeat the grand feat of opening a portal huge enough to take out three Megoliaths only for it to backfire as she used up her aura yet again and got stabbed through by a Lancer. She shot the lancer until it died but then came the Wyvern. She got snatched up by it and carried away, but Suvi chased after trying to save her. The Wyvern was taken out, but Suvi’s aura was also tapped and they had nothing left to do but fall.
  • But they fell together.
personality

Fierce, demanding, arrogant, loud. That’s a lot of what describes Viri. She takes shit from no one, although she always expects others to be looking down on her, whether because she’s Vacuan or because she’s a Faunus. Viri is very much of Vacuo. She believed that if you survive you deserve to survive. You do what you can until you can’t. You look out for your tribe. You look out for your fellow Vacuans. You don’t let other people put you down because fuck them.

But she’s also afraid to get too close to people, because she feels like everyone is judging her and she had to prove them wrong. She assumes people are looking down on her and she had to work harder and do more to get their respect. She also was a very diligent with her studies at school because her learning disability and farsightedness made learning and struggling hard for her in your standard school program. She would spent hours reading and studying as much as she could and would become frustrated by it, but she didn’t give up. Viri isn’t someone who knows how to give up. It’s not the Vacuan way. You work hard, you move on, and you live.

It took time for Viri to believe that her team would have her back, but Lys and Berrin being such genuinely open and caring people helped. It was Suvi that it took longer for her build a bond with because they come from such different backgrounds and Suvi’s lack of emotions versus Viri’s abundance of them was doomed to clash. But Lys did not give up on their team and eventually forced Viri to take a good long look at her behavior and realize she was the one bringing their team down with her constant fighting with Suvi over every imagined slight. So she knew she had to do better. She knew they needed her to be a better teammate and not just someone on their team doing her own thing.

It wasn’t until after the mission where she and Lys were seriously injured and Suvi was there for them that Viri finally saw Suvi as her own person, and not just an Elite who coasted on her wealth and reputation. Sure, maybe Suvi didn’t have emotions the way Viri did, but she was trying. Most of the time. And that meant Viri needed to do the same. They bickered and bantered, but it wasn’t with the same tension and conflict anymore.

They talked, they bonded, and it made them a better team. Viri didn’t feel like it was her against the world anymore. Her team was there for her and she could be there for them. When her parents died, her team supported her. When her parents died, she was devasted. She knew she needed to move on and that mourning them for too long wouldn’t help anyone, but she’s not the kind of person who can shut down her feelings that way. She needed the time and she knew she would be okay. Her team was there for her then, too.

Viri calmed down a lot after they graduated. She was still loud and aggressive and assertive, never letting anyone walk over her or her team. But she was also fiercely protective of them, sometimes to the point of annoying them. She trusted them to fight and live, but also would do whatever she could to make sure that happened. Yes, that meant the tank of a man that was Berrin, too, no matter what he said. She didn’t mind though, because them being annoyed with her meant they were alive to be annoyed and that’s most that okay with her. Her team is her family and she will protect what family she has left.

abilities

DARK CORRIDOR: The ability to create portals using shadows that will travel to another shadow in a different location. She cannot create portals to a location she has not visited or at least seen visually (such as in a detailed photograph or video), and that location must have shadows present for her to open the portal into. She can sense the shadows when making the portal, so she knows whether or not the location she is trying to reach is usable. The greater the distance, the more aura it uses up, but short distances do not use up much aura and thus she can create multiple consecutive portals in this way.

SHARPSHOOTER: A crossbow with a sniper rifle built into it that uses dust bullets and arrowheads filled with different types of dust. She is an expert sniper.

FAUNUS TRAIT: As a Faunus, Viri has gecko eyes which cause her to have very poor near vision, but excellent far vision. She also is able to see much better at night than a human.

AURA: Viri has aura that she can use to activate her Semblance and use aura armor (a reflexive protective aura all humans with training can use to protect themselves), but she does not have huge reserves like her teammate Lys does. She has to be more strategic at how she uses it.

HUNTRESS TRAINING:Viri is a trained huntswoman who managed to stay alive for 8 years in the business (her late 20s), which is a pretty good run. She is a better close range fighter than most people would think, but that’s because she trained in fighting by feel and sound instead of relying on her eyes and their poor vision. She still isn’t as good as someone like Suvi or Berrin, but she can hold her own.
